Missing & Damaged Shingles
Cracked, curling, or missing shingles expose your roof deck to water. We match and replace them, or re-roof when it's beyond repair.
Understanding Missing & Damaged Shingles
Shingles are your roof's first line of defense. When wind, age, or poor fastening lifts or removes them, the deck below is exposed, and water finds it fast.
Missing or damaged shingles are gaps in the roof's protective layer, caused by wind, impact, age, or improper installation. Even one exposed area can lead to leaks and deck rot.

Wind Uplift
Nor'easters and gusts lift and tear shingles, especially at edges and ridges.
Age & Brittleness
Past 20 years, asphalt shingles get brittle, curl, and crack, then shed in storms.
Poor Fastening
Under-nailed or misaligned shingles from a cheap install fail early.
Granule Loss
Shingles that have lost their protective granules break down and blow off.
Warning Signs
- Visible bald spots on the roof
- Shingle pieces in the yard after storms
- Curling or cupping shingle edges
- Granules collecting in gutters
- Exposed underlayment or decking
What Happens If You Wait
Each exposed area lets water into the deck, spreading rot and staining ceilings. A few missing shingles today can become widespread failure and a full replacement if ignored.

Questions AboutMissing & Damaged Shingles
Can you replace just a few missing or damaged shingles instead of the whole roof?
Yes. If the surrounding roof is sound and the damage is localized, we can spot-replace individual shingles or a small section rather than replacing the entire roof. Our free inspection determines whether a targeted repair will fully protect the deck or whether wider replacement is the smarter long-term call.
Will the new shingles match my existing roof?
We do our best to match color, profile, and brand, and on many MetroWest roofs the match is very close. Keep in mind that older shingles fade from years of New England sun, so a repair patch may look slightly newer at first, though it typically weathers in over a season or two.
How urgent is it to fix missing shingles?
It is urgent. A missing or cracked shingle exposes the underlayment and roof deck to rain, snowmelt, and wind-driven moisture, which can lead to leaks, rot, and mold within weeks. In our MetroWest, MA climate we recommend addressing exposed decking before the next storm or freeze-thaw cycle.
What causes shingles to curl, crack, or blow off?
The most common causes are age and heat degradation, high winds and Nor'easters, poor attic ventilation that bakes the shingles, and improper installation or under-nailing. New England's freeze-thaw swings and ice buildup along eaves also loosen and crack shingles over time.
When should I repair versus replace the whole roof?
A good rule of thumb is that if damage affects more than about 30 percent of the roof, spans multiple slopes, or the roof is near the end of its lifespan, replacement is usually more cost-effective than repeated repairs. If the damage is isolated and the roof is otherwise in good shape, a repair is the right choice, and our inspection will give you an honest recommendation either way.
